Polythene sheeting has been used for decades and some of the new products on the market are better than ever. (I would recommend going for the recycled sheeting as it works just as well and is much better for the environment.)

It works simply by stopping the sun getting to the parts of the garden you don’t want it to and only allowing your plants to flourish – not the weeds. And the great part is the cure is also the treatment! Once you have laid the sheeting it is there to stay and goes on protecting the plants – no need for regular top ups with dangerous chemicals.

Apply Polythene Sheeting in 3 easy steps:

1. Measure the area you are planting or have planted and cut enough polythene sheeting to cover the area. Here I would again recommend making your purchase from somewhere that provides sheeting in very exact sizing. There’s nothing worse than having to buy 50 squared metres of sheeting for a small tomato patch! To do this you will probably need to shop online.

2. Mark where the plants are or will be on your sheeting and cut a small X on each mark to allow your plants to come through the sheeting. Carefully lay the sheeting down so that it is neatly and firmly on the soil with your desired plants showing through nicely.

3. Water the plants, allowing the water to make it’s way through all the cuts. You may also wish to cover the black plastic in a thin layer of soil to hide the sheeting, but make sure you expose the base of each plant so that it can continue to be watered.

And there we have it – a very cheap, quick and safe way of stopping weeds for good!
